Arvid Kappas

I studied psychology in Germany at Justus-Liebig-University in Gießen, where I obtained my degree as Diplom-Psychologe and went from there to Dartmouth College in the USA, where I obtained my Ph.D. in Social Psychology in 1989, working with John Lanzetta and Bob Kleck. The title of my thesis was Control of Emotion and was part of the then-nascent field of emotion regulation.

In the three years that followed, I worked as a post-doc at the University of Geneva, Switzerland working on affective development with Klaus Scherer, Pierre Mounoud, and Dan Stern. During that time I also taught a few courses at Fribourg University. My first position as assistant professor started in 1992 at Laval University in Quebec City, Canada, where I worked until 2001, having been promoted to associate professor in 1997.

From 2001 to 2003, I was a senior lecturer at the University of Hull in the UK. In 2003, I moved to Constructor University in Bremen as a Professor of Psychology, where I continue to work. From 2014 to 2024, I was Dean and responsible for graduate education and the School of Business, Social, and Decision Sciences.
